| Method #17: Six Degrees of Separation
There's a saying "It's not what you know, but
who you know." Six degrees of separation goes many steps beyond
that. It's not who you know, but who they know...and who they know,
etc. For example, you may know the librarian whose sister is a therapist
for the personal assistant to Tom Cruise.
It is a simple theory that came out of the 60's.
You are no more than six relationships away from anyone in the world.
If you know 100 people, that means you could possibly have access to
100 networks. There are three steps that will help you turn current
relationships into networking relationships.
1. Take the time and effort to build strong relationships
and credibility.
The key here is to build the relationship before
you need it. Don't meet someone and instantly start trying to access
their network. That's rude and ineffective. Develop real relationships
and you'll be far more successful when you make requests for access.
2. Make a list of everyone you know who could possibly
know someone in the
industry.
Many times, creating this list will uncover hidden
treasures in your network. Even if you think you're aware of everyone
who has industry contacts, you may want to check. Some people in your
network may surprise you.
3. Ask in a way that makes it easy for them to access
their network.
Avoid the three D's when you ask -- Dumb, Desperate,
and Dominant. None of those will be successful if they show up as part
of your request. Consider using something simple like "I've got
a story about________ that I'm sending to producers. Know anyone that
might be interested in it?"
If you take the time to build relationships, explore
who they know, and ask in a considerate manner, chances are that you
may become one of the amazing Hollywood success stories that come from
six degrees of separation.
